| Lawsuits have been filed against Merck relating to Fosamax. Fosamax has been linked to a rare and serious condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw. This is also known as jawbone tissue death.
This condition is caused by a restriction of blood flow to the jaw. Osteonecrosis or jawbone tissue death results in serious and irreversible damage to the jaw.
There is no cure for this condition, which is also known as "rotting of the jawbone," and "ONJ."
According to a recent study, "[t]he patients developed ONJ after normal bone trauma, such as a tooth extraction, while receiving bisphosphonate therapy. Rather than healing, the bone began to die, and a majority of the patients required surgery to remove the diseased bone."

| Fosamax and other bisphosphonates are typically prescribed to women who are post-menopausal to prevent or treat osteoporosis. They are also used in cancer patients whose disease has spread to the bone causing severe bone pain or fractures. These medications work by inhibiting osteoclasts, the cells that break down bone, making the bones thicker and less likely to break. A reason that bisphosphonates may sometimes do the opposite of their intended effect is that osteoclasts prompt osteoblasts, the cells that build up bone, to form.
Fosamax, manufactured by Merck, has been linked to the serious bone disease Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a warning letter to health professionals to alert them to the link between medications like Fosamax and ONJ.
