Actiq is a powerful narcotic approved by the FDA for cancer patients. The narcotic, a synthetic form of heroin, is delivered via a lollipop, which the patient licks. Evidence suggests that the manufacturer has aggressively marketed the drug for off-label uses (uses for which the drug was not approved by the FDA), such as common ailments like knee pain, head aches, and back pain. It has even been prescribed to pregnant mothers. The drug is extremely potent and carries a very high likelihood of abuse. Some estimate that only approximately 1% of all users of Actiq are actually using it for the purposes it was approved by the FDA.
