Depakote Birth Defect Information
A study published in the August 2006 issue of Neurology reported that approximately 20.3% of pregnant women who took Depakote suffered serious adverse outcomes related to the birth of their children, compared to only 1% to 10.7% of pregnant women who took similar medications.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine said that children who were born to mothers who took Depakote while pregnant had lower IQ’s.
The North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy registry shows that the rate of major malformations in babies born to women with epilepsy taking valproate is almost 4 times higher than the rate in babies born to women taking other antiepileptic drugs. Sixteen major malformations were seen, and these included neural tub defects, craniofacial defects, cardiovascular malformations and others.
In December 2009, the FDA released a reminder to doctors that women who may become pregnant should be warned that Depakote use could cause a wide variety of birth defects.
