Topamax Oral Birth Defects Information: The FDA has recently upgraded its warning for topiramate (Topamax) use during pregnancy from category C to D, which means there is positive evidence of fetal risk based on human data. According to the North American Antiepileptic Drug (AED) Pregnancy registry, the FDA says 1.4% of infants exposed to topiramate (Topamax or it’s equivalents) during pregnancy developed cleft lip or cleft palate, compared with .38%-.55% of infants exposed to other epilepsy drugs. Topamax is up to 16 times more likely to cause these birth defects.
