The FDA also noted that it is not clear that transvaginal POP repair with mesh is more effective than traditional non-mesh repair in all patients with POP, and it may expose patients to greater risk.
The FDA notes that between January 2005 and December 2010, it received approximately 4000 reports of adverse events associated with surgical mesh devices used to repair POP and SUI.
One of the most frequently reported complications for mesh being used to repair POP is that the mesh erodes through the vaginal wall. This complication occurs in approximately 10% of women within 12 months of surgery.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have complications or symptoms, including vaginal bleeding or discharge, pelvic or groin pain or pain during sex. Make sure they know you have mesh.
