The prescription drug Vioxx has become used
widely around the world. Some patients on the drug are experiencing
problems including serious heart problems such as heart attack.
Merck & Co., the maker of Vioxx, sponsored a study of the drug
to assess the effects of the drug on its users. It compared the
drug to another painkiller, Naproxen.

Though the study found that patients who
took Vioxx had fewer ulcers and other stomach problems, it showed
that people who took Vioxx were much more likely to have serious
cardiovascular problems. In fact, more than twice as many Vioxx
users suffered serious cardiovascular problems than Naproxen users
did. Medical literature reported that the use of Vioxx may increase
a person’s risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.
The Federal Food and Drug Administration, the agency that regulates
drugs, warned in a letter about the dangers of Vioxx. In the letter
it called the way Vioxx was promoted “false, lacking in fair
balance or otherwise misleading."
Merck claims that Vioxx does not cause heart attacks. It claims
that the difference in statistics is related to the fact that other
pain medications thin the blood and may prevent heart attacks and
that Vioxx does not offer that benefit.
The Food and Drug Administration strongly criticized Merck’s
refusal of responsibility and noted that Merck’s claim was
hypothetical and wrongly minimized and omitted important risk information
about Vioxx use with other drugs.
Merck went so far as to claim that Vioxx has a “favorable
cardiovascular safety profile.” The Food and Drug Administration
called that claim “incomprehensible”, and referred to
Merck’s own study which showed that people who took Vioxx
were more than twice as likely to suffer heart attack or other cardiovascular
problems than patients on Naproxen.
