Zimmer is a leading manufacturer and seller of artificial orthopedic implants. Zimmer’s leading knee replacement system is the NexGen Knee Replacement System which since 1994 has been used with success. However, certain Zimmer NexGen knee replacement systems have been linked to a number of problems, including reports of pain, loosening of the implant and failure of the replacement knee leading to revision surgery.
In March 2010, data was presented by a group of prominent knee surgeons with regard to the cementless NexGen CR-Flex indicating nearly 9% of patients examined after two years required revision knee surgery and 36% showed signs of loosening of the artificial knee. These failure rates are higher than expected and are believed to be due to design defects in certain Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex components.
On July 29, 2010 Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) issued a letter to Zimmer Holdings regarding problems with some of the Zimmer NexGen knee replacement systems, indicating that the Senate Finance Committee was investigating Zimmer’s handling of concerns raised by consultants and contractors regarding the safety of its products.
